Laurie Potter
Laurie Potter

I was born and raised in Maryland, close to the beautiful Chesapeake Bay. Much of my youth was spent observing and enjoying the wonders of nature in the woods and by the waterways of the bay area. I learned a great deal about trees, flowers, birds and other wildlife through my parents and their interest in the natural world. I began to express my love of these things at an early age by drawing and painting, and have continued to do so to this day.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Art from Millersville University, Pa, I did some traveling around the United States, taking the opportunity to sketch at the many spectacular National Parks along the way. When I traveled through the Pacific Northwest I fell in love with the diverse beauty of the region. I decided to relocate to the west coast ten years ago and I now reside in Bellingham, Washington.

My college education allowed me to explore a variety of materials and methods, so afterwards I spent many years working to discover what I enjoyed most, and developing my own personal style. During my years of experimenting with what technique best fit my own artistic statement, I worked in several frame shops and galleries, learning to design and complete the framing for my work. It is important to me to conclude the entire creative process by framing all of my own artwork, from originals to prints. I feel that the best presentation of the piece is possible only by choosing matting and framing that is right for the subject and mood of the painting.

Though I enjoy other subject matter, I have focused mainly on painting wildlife and landscapes, in a representational style. My paintings are my interpretation of what I observe in nature. I strive to represent each species of plant or animal as close to its true form as possible, but my own imagination and vision is an important part of each piece. I enjoy donating my artwork to the auctions of several charitable organizations. I show my work at several northwest galleries and shops, and on my website, as well as at juried events and summer art festivals.
