In the photographic tradition of his father
and grandfather, Peter Fromm began taking pictures in 1960.
He majored in photography at Ohio University where he earned
a Bachelor of Fine Art degree in 1971. In 1974 Peter completed
a Master of Science program and the University of Oregon which
combined Audio-Visual Communication with Environmental Education
and Outdoor Recreation. Following graduate school, he moved
to Bellingham, Washington to continue his photography and
to learn to sail. In 1979, he bought ‘Uwila,’ a custom, 30
foot wooden sailboat, which is still his home.

Professional photography has been Peter’s main occupation
since 1970. He has accomplished a wide variety of photographic,
slide show, film and video assignments for diverse clients
and his pictures have been published in numerous books and
magazines.
Peter’s multi-projector slide shows are
an inspirational art form. ‘I Like Bellingham’ was an official
Bicentennial ’76 event. ‘Wooden Boats - Spirits on the Water’
debuted at the 1994 Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival. The
Washington State Commission for the Humanities has included
both ‘Visions of a Water Rat: Boats and Boating in the Pacific
Northwest’ and his unique ‘Whale Tales Presentation’ in their
2000-2002 Inquiring Mind Program. Peter is also the author
and publisher of Whale Tales, Human Interactions With Whales:
Volume One and Two.
Fromm has spent much of his life in outdoor
activities that include exploring caves, climbing rocks and
mountains, white-water rafting, bicycle touring and racing,
ski touring, backpacking and sea kayaking.
Peter is a U.S. Coast Guard licensed 100-ton
Master and has been Captain and Naturalist aboard whale watching
boats since 1993. He has sailed on more than 140 different
boats in many parts of the world. His home is in the San Juan
Islands.
