Sandblasted Glass - Architectural Panels and Tiles
Lori Nelson-Clonts has been offering fine art sandblasted
glass pieces to collectors for over twenty years. Her love of the Pacific
Northwest is visible in the amazing pieces she creates.
Her glass pieces are sandblasted, which means they are
carved with high pressure sand and air mixed. The process is a ‘resist
process.’ A mask of a thin rubber-like material is applied to the glass
like shelf paper. Then the drawing is transferred and redrawn in ink.
All the lines are cut with a small knife. Some of the shapes are removed
to expose the parts ready for blasting. Each piece is then sandblasted
in stages, blasting the deepest shapes first and working up to the shallowest
areas.
Lori says that she loves carved glass for its ethereal
quality. Something that was once sand is transformed to liquid and then
to a solid transparent form that interacts with light and space like no
other material. The subtle ghost like images of sandblasted glass appear
solid and airy at the same.
